In Aztec mythology, Tlazolteotl (Tlacolteotl, IPA: [tɬasoɬ'teotɬ]) is a goddess of purification, steam bath, midwives, filth, and a patroness of adulterers. In Nahuatl, the word tlazolli can refer to vice and diseases. Thus, Tlazolteotl was a goddess of filth (sin), vice, and sexual misdeeds. However, she was a purification goddess as well, who forgave the sins and disease of those caused by misdeeds, particurlarly sexual misdeeds

Mythology

Tlazolteotl is said to be one of the Nine Figures of the Creation of the World. This includes Chalchiuhtlicue and the rain god Tlaloc. Tlazolteotl was also considered one of the thirteen Companions of the Day. It's suggested then that this might be the source of her title as "Mother of the gods," [6] a title shared with Toci and Coatlicue. This is sometimes taken as evidence that Tlazolteotl may have been considered a lesser aspect of one of these goddesses.

One myth relates to Tlazolteotl's role as a temptress. In this legend, a hermit by the name of Jappan leaves his family to live in the desert in devotion to the gods. Rather insulted by this, Tlazolteotl decided to test him in his renunciation of the world. Jappan was easily seduced. When the gods found out about this, they decapitated him and turned him into a scorpion as punishment.

Tlazolteotl (Nahuatl: Schmutzfresserin, tlazolli, der Schmutz, die Krankheit) war in der aztekischen Mythologie die Göttin die Wollust und der verbotenen Liebe. Sie war auch unter dem Namen Tlaelquani (die, welche Unreines frisst) bekannt und galt als Göttin von Reue und Reinigung.

Tlazolteotl is a Toltec earth mother, the Goddess of carnal love and desire. Like Kali in India, she is portrayed as a horrible, devouring figure yet is also honoured as a moving creative principle. She is sometimes pictured as four sisters (the four ages of woman) who are present at the crossroads of ones life. Tlazolteotl is best known as the eater of impurities. Once in a lifetime, a person confessed her worst deeds and sins to Tlazolteotl, holding back nothing. In the return the confessor recived absolution: no impurity or defilement was too great to be forgiven. Tlaxolteotl is that deep part of ourselves that we fear because it is so powerful and unfamiliar. Yet when we touch her through hear fearsome countenance, we find absolut mercy.

She is proof that anything that can overwhelm and destroy also has the power to heal and grant forgiveness.
